Gold is a hallmark of traditional Orthodox iconography. It was introduced during the Byzantine era to symbolise divine light and heavenly transcendence. In pursuit of a more modern aesthetic, Yorgos transformed this panagia glykophilousa, or sweet kissing holy virgin, into a monochromatic glorification of the tenderly care of a mother for her baby son.
