In Orthodox traditions, the icons are considered to be holy in themselves. They are said to be “acheiropoieton”, untouched by human hand and hence created by saints. In Faceless the hand of God is quite clear to the artist: the breaking of this piece went out of any control from the artist in such a way that further painting of the holy face was not necessary.
